Bulluck Anxious About Lack Of Deals
Staff Report March 12, 2010
Ten-year veteran Keith Bulluck admits to being anxious about finding a new big-dollar contract after watching the first two weeks of free agency.
"At the rate the market has been set, I'm not too anxious to go visit anywhere and hear what they have to say," Bulluck said during an interview on ESPN Radio.
Bulluck likely would have been one of the top five agents available had he not suffered an ACL injury in the final three weeks of the regular season. Now, Bulluck continues to rehab the knee in hopes of making free agent visits in May or June.
With few exceptions, free agents have remained on the sidelines during the first two weeks of free agency. Defensive End Julius Peppers signed a six-year deal worth $91.5 million in the first hours of free agency. That kind of deal has been the exception.
"Just sitting back and looking at how everything took place from the first day of free agency, normally in the past years when we have had a salary cap, you see like ten guys going on the first day, you see blockbuster deals," Bulluck said.
Value has been the watch-word, symbolized by Thomas Jones' deal with the Chiefs this week. The Jets released the veteran running back, the starter on the league's top rushing attack, just before he was due a roster bonus.
"1,400 yards, 14 touchdowns later, you're only worth $5 million over two years," Bulluck said.
The Titans have expressed an interest in retaining Bulluck, but most believe it would be a one-year deal. Head Coach Jeff Fisher said at the NFL Combine he would like to keep the former 2000 draft pick part of the team. Bulluck said he has seen the franchise release stars like Steve McNair and Eddie George, even pointing out the Oilers released Earl Campbell.
For now, Bulluck said he remains totally focused on coming back from the injury.
"I've told my agent I don't really want to hear anything until May anyway, because I know by May I will be able to show any team anything I need to show them," Bulluck said. "Being a free agent, not signed, and coming off an injury, I think the best thing for my situtation is just to fall back and get better."
