The Tennessee Titans visited Jacksonville in Week 2 and handled their business exactly the way they needed to. The early season division lead was on the line, and the Titans controlled most of the game as they rolled to a 37-16 win at EverBank Field. Tennessee featured a balanced offensive attack and an aggressive defense in this important early season road win. This game was the first time that the Two Tone Blue had won in Jacksonville or anywhere else on the road in the division since 2013.
Mike Mularkey and his team have emphasized performing well in the division this year and they got off to a good first step in that regard. Not only did the Titans improve to (1-1) on the season, but they also took the outright AFC South lead away from the Jaguars in the process.
The Titans and Jaguars were the only interdivisional matchup this week in the AFC South. Houston and Indianapolis were in action elsewhere this weekend, and the Texans hung on in Cincinnati to defeat the Bengals 13-9 on Thursday night. The Colts lost 16-13 in overtime at home to the Cardinals falling to (0-2) and last in the division.
On the injury front for the Titans, Running Back Demarco Murray and Wideout Corey Davis are both day to day with what Head Coach Mike Mularkey termed to be hamstring strains. Cornerback Tye Smith should be available for this week’s action, but Safety Johnathan Cyprien will still be out for this week’s game.
Turning our attention to the Titans Week 3 opponent, let’s take a closer look at the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are an NFC West power who have made the playoffs five seasons in a row and went to the Super Bowl in both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Seahawks have struggled on offense through two games, only mustering one touchdown through their first eight quarters of action. However, Coach Mularkey mentioned in his weekly press conference that the Titans defense is still preparing for the fireworks that the Seahawks are capable of on that side of the ball. On the defensive side of the ball, the Seahawks are annually one of the league’s stingiest units and they currently rank eighth in scoring defense, surrendering 13 points per game. On Sunday afternoon, the Seahawks defensive stars including Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman and Bobby Wagner helped Seattle hold on for a hard-fought 12-9 win against the 49ers.
Sunday’s game will be the first time that Seattle has come to the Music City since the 2005 season when the Seahawks won 28-24 at The Coliseum. These two teams have split their last two meetings, but the Titans did not have Quarterback Marcus Mariota in either of those games. Seattle Quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 257 yards in his only start against the Titans during the Seahawks World Championship season in 2013-14.
