Helping Hands of the Titans: Robert Spillane: By Eli Hiskey

In this week’s edition of the Helping Hands of the Titans, we’re highlighting an undrafted linebacker out of Western Michigan, Robert Spillane. He separates himself from others on the field through his hard work and the tenacious attitude he brings every single snap. He carries that attitude with him through other walks of life as well, one of those being his mission to raise awareness for rare diseases. Heading into his Pro Day this past spring, Spillane was approached by Uplifting Athletes, who asked if they could sponsor him. Said Spillane, “I thought it was a great opportunity to give back finally, and do everything I could to help them, so I took advantage of that.” Uplifting Athletes partnered with him to launch his Reps for Rare Diseases campaign. The campaign raised money for numerous charitable programs focused on rare diseases, such as Rare Disease Awareness, Rare Disease Research, Uplifting Experiences and Uplifting Leaders. Spillane had fans and supporters pledge for each bench press repetition he did at his Western Michigan Pro Day. Robert managed to raise a quarter of his goal, and he’s not done yet. “I plan on continuing to raise awareness by getting the word out there about rare diseases, and try to get people to donate to a cause that is really worthy of a donation.” For those that may not know, a rare disease is classified as a disease that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans, and that low exposure leads to underfinanced research for finding and creating treatments. Robert is one of many Titans dedicated to a cause, and you can follow along with our weekly series, Helping Hands of the Titans, to learn more about how the Tennessee Titans are making a positive impact in the community.
