Chargers agree to deal with QB Trey Lance

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Friday that they have agreed to a deal with quarterback Trey Lance.

According to published reports, the deal is for one year and worth up to $6.2 million.

Lance figures to the third-string quarterback behind starter Justin Herbert and veteran reserve Taylor Heinicke.

Lance was third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

He played in six games in 2021, making two starts, and passed for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.

He began the 2022 season as the San Francisco starter but sustained a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Later that season, Brock Purdy established himself as the 49ers’ starter.

Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys prior to the 2023 season but didn’t see any playing time. He played in four games last season and made one start — completing 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards against the Washington Commanders in Week 18.

Lance, who turns 25 next month, has passed for 1,063 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 career games (five starts). He has added 276 rushing yards and one score.

Lance played for FCS power North Dakota State before entering the NFL Draft.
